3D Face Morph (Holy Crap)

Just a quick post. I've been busy so no updates for a minute, but here's something to look at. Think about the diabolical possibilities.

Human Locator by Freeset

Human Locator is a system designed by Feeset that uses cutting edge software to track full body movements in front of a screen in real-time. This allows the viewers to participate in the ad. This is definitely something to watch for in the future. The interactive mirror after the jump and the video found here are amazing; the system seems to turn what's usually a one-sided experience of an advertiser yelling in your face to a partnership where you get to participate in the ad. I can see this turning into puzzles and games where people on the street collectively solve problems while others watch, yell hints, get involved, etc.. Brilliant.

Trulia Real Estate Search

Trulia is probably the best real estate search the we've found on the interwebs these days. The site seems like it compiles results from many different realtors and offers nice extras like school maps and a feature called a "heat map" that displays the price range of houses in a specific area. The site goes on to tell you the average price of homes in the area for sale, and the average price of similar properties, all while using a Google Maps interface. Very useful for becoming a slum lord.

Crutch! Bill Shannon

Bill Shannon was born with a bi-lateral hip deformity called Legg Calve Perthes, and though he has to spend his life on crutches, it hasn't stopped him from skateboarding, breakdancing (yeah, he does flares), and performing. The kid is sick.

Jamie Pierre's 255' Cliff Drop

This is Jamie Pierre's 255 foot, world record setting cliff drop in Grand Targhee, WY. We don't usually like to post "whoa look at that guy" videos, but this isn't some 10 second clip of a jack-ass jumping a swimming pool, it's a 5 minute video that does a good job of discussing the attempt and what was going through Jamie's head while he fell.

iDiom (byBurton)

iDiom, a luxury sub-label of Burton, is a collaboration between the snow mega-brand and Japanese streetwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara. The new winter collectoin has some really nice pieces for the upcoming season that would probably serve you better in the streets than on the hill. Only available in limited quantities at select dealers, the jackets, boards, and bindings are better found on Ebay or theGlade and feature a hi-tech low-flash mentality.

IceHotel

The Ice Hotel is a seventeen year-old tradition in the village of JukkasjÀrvi, Sweden. Carved from the frozen Torne River, the ice is shaved, stacked, cut, molded in to beautiful suites by architects and designers. The water on the Torne flows slowly and freezes slowly which makes for naturally clear ice. The hotel features an Absolute Vodka bar, a gourmet restaurant, and will cost you between $350 and $600 a night. Click on this link to explore the galleries form the past 2 years. Some of the rooms and art is incredible.

Samsung YP-K3

Meet the Samsung YP-K3. This is probably the first DAP (Digital Audio Player) that we've seen that could give the Nano some competition. Features are scarce right now, but it's believed to be 1.8inch OLED display and an FM tuner. Sexy.

Motofone F3

Looks like crap right? So why'd we make a post about it. The F3 is the first in Motorola's line of SCPL (Scalpel) phones. It also runs the Linux operating system, uses an "electronic paper" display, and has usability features for the illiterate. Ok, so it's got some interesting features (how do you make a phone for the illiterate?), but on top of that, the phone is targeted at the low-end market where sales are growing faster than any other demographic--the phone was realeased in India before Korea, Japan, Europe or the US. How'd they do it? They designed a phone that's just a phone--no gimmicks, games, bells, whistles, etc. It makes calls and receives calls. Because of it's simplicity Moto is saying the F3 has "extended battery life", but it's really a nice way of saying "we got rid of all the crap that sucks battery life, and now our phone is expected to have a 2 week standby time and 9 hours of contiuous talk." The phone is made from inexpensive parts that allow it to have a predicted price of $50 in the US...that's without carrier subsidies. Be prepared to see a lot of these. Motofone F3

Freedom to Fascism

Freedom to Fasicm is a doc. film by Aaron Russo that originally started off with Aaron just trying to find the actual law that states that Americans have to pay an income tax. After searching, Aaron finds out that not only does no law exist but it has also been proven in courts many times that the govt. does not have the right to tax your wages. The politically unbiased film then goes through interviews with Congressmen, former IRS agents, tax attourney's and authors that slowly connects the IRS, the Federal Reserve, and the World Trade Organizazion. Freedom ends with a message concerning world banking, RFID tags, and a global government. The film is powerful and moving, discussing how the middle class is slowly becoming a debt ridden, propertyless entity enslaved by the banks who plan on moving the world towards one bank and one government. You could call it conspiracy, but Aaron has many valid points especially with the new "threat" of terrorism where the fear of an unknown, unseen, could-be-anywhere enemy inspires compliance. Above is the ful movie, but more info can be found at the site: Freedom to Fascism.

Mustang Concept Giugiaro

The Giugiaro Concept Mustang is definitely a stunner. The car has some nice color, full glass roof, and a unique interior with real horsehide accents. However, as nice as the car is, to imagine it as a reality is disturbing. The car itself looks good, but it's overdone and expensive. Dumb down the interior to an affordable(manufacturable/sellable) level, kill the scissor doors, rmove the glass roof, pull the rims off, and you start to see the older Pony car of the 90's with it's simple/boring lines. The concept is amazing, but the form feels too simple. Mustang Concept Giugiaro

Huldofolk Paver

This pavement tile from Bility uses a unique sense of whimsy by tying in with the Icelandic elves called "Huldofolk". The elves live around humans but choose to remain hidden until they decide to be seen. Placed in your garden or house, the tile has a miniature staircase that leads down to the Huldofolk domain. Robo Coaster

The RoboCoaster... I don't even know where to start with this one. It's basically a giant robot arm and claw with a seat that you strap yourself into and it...uh..simulates a roller coaster. The thing looks like the leftovers of a Transformer or a giant scaled version of that thing you played with in High School Technology class, and it'd would have no problem slamming your ass into the ground while taking out a few bystanders in the process. I'll wait until they have two arms that play catch with a football I have to buckle myself into. Robo Coaster

Made in Italy from 100% Merino wool, these scarve convey a sense of nostalgia and whimsy for the nerds of yesteryear...yesteryear? Did I just write that? Nike Amp+

The new Nike Amp+ is an addition to their Nike+ line. The wrist watch-like device will sync with the Nike+iPod system to display information on an LED display that's "hidden" under a matte finish, and it's rumored to supply the Nike+ users with something they've been lacking--a heart monitor. More info as it develops. Image copyright: Men's Health Nike Amp+

Fredrikson Stallard

Fredrikson Stallard was featured on MoCo LoCo recently and had some nice pieces devoted to bridging the past and the present. The Ming #2 vase above seemed to stand out the most with it's vibrant color and it's mix of the old-school vase with the photoshop "single pixel stretch" effect applied to it. The site's music/ambiance needs some work, but it has some really nice furniture and objects. Fredrikson Stallard

R33 Skyline GT-R

In case you doubted the potentially insane power that can be coaxed from a GT-R, here's a video of Kazuhiko Nagata driving a 1200BHP Skyline that can get you up to 200MPH in 24 seconds. Oh, and in the video....the chase car filming is going 90mph when the GT-R blows by. R33 Skyline GT-R

New S+ark from Fossil

The new S+ark watch from Fossil features a hole in the middle, giving it a fresh look that likens itself to a bearing. Well, even if you don't like the doughnut hole or the way Stark uses a "+" sign instead of "t" (pretentious?), you still have to like the styling of the digital dial. We've had an older Stark watch for a while and really like the styling. It's simple and gets noticed, "whoa...is that a watch?". Men can't wear that much jewelry without looking too Mr. T, so a good watch is a must. New S+ark from Fossil

No longer the "Skyline GT-R", this is the stand-alone "GT-R"; it's coming to the US soon, and it's insane. The New GT-R

Google Maps: Calling

Oh man...Google Maps now has a feature that will let you enter your phone number in a bubble like above, and then it will call your phone, call the business' phone and connect you. Not an earth shattering feature, but still cool because it's only a few clicks. However, there is no current way to keep people from entering other people's phone numbers as pranks. Have a strip club call your friend at 3am, for instance.... Google Maps: Calling

Google TechTalks

LIfehacker made a post recently about Google TechTalks. Apparently, TechTalks are in-house presentations done by people that work at Google or by guest speakers. Watch the above video and have your mind blown. Essentially, Luis Von Ahn discusses how they created a game that people play for free to help Google tag all the images on the internet. And if people play the game as much as they play solitare, all the images on the internet will be labeled in six months....all the images....all of them....seriously. He gets into some much more complicated stuff like porn webmasters using computers to solve problems and then when the computer hits snag, it asks for human help....so Humans using computers that use humans to solve problems together. The whole thing discussed Human Computation, and I haven't finished the video yet, but the first 35mins were off the chain. Google TechTalks

SectorSeven Inc.

Sector Seven's new portfolio site offers a stunning interface, great colors, and some nice work done with clients such as Microsoft and Subaru. Most of the site's interface ideas have been used before, but the way that Sector uses them is what makes the site good. The scrolling is tight and easy to use with the mouse; the opening book is nicely done with the "camera moving back for animation shots; and the pop-up bubbles give the site a playful feel among the very minimal, angular style. what happened to Coolhunting.com

Okay...this is tough for me, but I have to do it. What happened over at Coolhunting? As far as design/coolstuff/chic blogs go, 7dv tips its hat to Josh Rubin; his site helped define a genre and became the architype for the sites that follow, but what happened with the current site redesign? I'm not so much a fan-boy that I fear change; in fact, I love change. Change is great because it means that someone has thought up a better way of doing things. I don't know about this new site though... They took away the best part of a blog--mindless scrolling though many posts that would reveal cool shit every time I flicked the wheel. The new site has three main posts, and then nine mini posts at the bottom with pictures only 100x100px. While many other blogs are enlarging their photos (gizmodo, engadget, product dose), Coolhunting has gone the opposite direction. Gone is the long list of cool objects that I could explore during the day, and what remains feels slightly cluttered and short. Do I have the right to crit Josh...probably not, but I have an affinity towards Coolhunting because it was one of the first blogs I looked at, and I miss the old one. I'm not asking for a complete site redesign; just give me more of the big posts with the actual information rather than the pix. WTF happened to Coolhunting.com

Danish advertising agency La Familia has a very nice portfolio. Good layout, scalable, nice images, good interface. Just right. La Familia

Probably fake, but hilarious either way. Shoot the turkey with flovor pellets instead of actual shot. The pellets then dissolve in the oven. Even if it's fake, it's still an interesting idea. Season Shot

&Design

&design has some really nice lighting, watch, and accesories currently on their site. The one we're drawn to the most though are the "Pla-model" rings you see above (right). It's interesting that the pieces come attached to the sprue from the injection mold machine, calling back to the fun of getting a model kit and snapping off all the parts to make a whole. &Design

VW Nanospyder Concept

The VDub Nanospyder concept was an exercise in unlimited design opportunity with the theme of creating a vehicle that would make the most of California without harming the environment. It's a completely conceptual car--only on paper--that runs on solar power and a fuel cell that pushes power to motors mounted on the wheels. The name is derived from the organically skinned nanotechnology skeleton that frames the car and adjusts rigidity on the fly. The power aspect is interesting, but not half as interesting as the proposal that one day we'll actually be growing our vehicles rather than assembling them, and that the materials today will be replaced with a more cellular and almost living tissue. Windows Media Player 11

We know...we know....iTunes is the ultimate media interaction technology for you, but just take a minute to look at this oddly sexy thing from Microsoft. The Noir color is choice, the interface is stream-lined, and the search engine has been much improved. It also includes a unique "stacking" feature where the albums and songs that share the same characteristics are stacked visually--kind of a nice combination of the Pandora.com information with your music collection. We were wondering when that would happen. It's not really earth shattering, but it's a nice update for WMP, and it seems that Microsoft is taking a few cues from Apple--even the new site is Apple-esque. Windows Media Player 11

To see a higher resolution video (much better) click here. The video is outstanding. I don't really have any idea what most of the parts are or if they really function in the fashion depicted in the video--especially the walking thing that's pulling the big blue glob. Maybe some med school students could enlighten me. The Inner Life of a Cell

Most people aren't familiar with the work of Eric Jordan and his associates, but you should be. 7dv has been watching Eric for about 8 years, and with every round of his company's website he amazes even further. He began as a freelance flasher, but became a tour de force because of his innovations and style. In fact, the 2advanced v3 site of 2001 titled "Expansions" won the "Most Influential Flash Site of the Decade" from Favorite Website Awards. The newest site "Attractor" has been out for a while, but we haven't posted on it until now. The style is still a little sci-fi and not as organic as most sites are currently, but it's still a very strong site with a nice atmosphere that conveys the company's branding very well. Here's a taste of some of 2a's work: Lost Planet game site, Lexus LS Microsite, and the T-Mobile myFaves site. Enjoy. 2advanced

Sketch Furniture by FRONT

Front Design of Sweden developed a manner to realize thier sketches with 3d. They basically motion capture their own sketches in real space, then use that information to generate 3d models in a computer, and then print the via SLA or SLS. The whole process is pretty cool, though undeveloped. The forms seem to have their own style much in the same way that sketching with Painter or SketchbookPro seem to dictate the style. Maybe one day we'll all finally be able to produce the actual products that we sketch...no matter how uncomfortable they may be in the real world, they'll look good from one angle. Oh man, forced perspective 3d objects...crazy! Sketch Furniture by FRONT

Net Neutrality?

This would be funny if it wasn't for real. The above ad was created by the National Cable and Telecommunications Association to confuse and scare people. The fact that they have a man lying on a bed while money floats down on him when they mention “Silicon Valley” is in poor taste. And the Google font used over the stupid looking man to spell “Mumbo Jumbo” is just disgusting. The ad runs like any political mud throwing ad. It over-simplifies issues, leads you to believe that the other guy is pulling one over on you, and then tells you what you think. Why would an association of cable television operators make this ad? Does is make sense that they would want to save you money? Rationally, the only reason that the cable companies would make an ad as blatantly reproachable as this would be if they were afraid--afraid of losing money. The ad is intended to swing your opinion in their favor by making you feel like someone is coming to get you. The truth is that you won’t “pay” as the ad suggests; the only thing that will happen if Net Neutrality stays in effect is that the major telecoms won’t make as much money. For those of you uninformed about net neutrality, it's the belief that the bandwidth of the internet does not play favorites. You can look at google or you can look at slashdot and you will download the site to your computer at the same speed. The bill put forward in Congress to end net neutrality will allow the cable providers AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, etc. to determine which sites will download faster to your computer. The idea would work something like this (as put forward by Craig "craigslist" Newmark). Imagine that you tried to order a pizza and the phone company said, " AT&T's preferred pizza provider is Domino's. Press 1 to connect to Domino's now. If you'd like to order from another pizzeria, please hold for three minutes while Domino's guaranteed orders are placed." It breaks down to the higher paying client (Domino's) will get it's hits first and then the lower paying companies will get in slower. You are inconvenienced to the point of just accepting Dominos because it’s the easier thing to do. This seems kind of annoying with food, but now imagine it was information
The entire idea of the bill to end Net Neutrality is so preposterous that it needs attention. You have a right as a citizen to get the information that you desire at the same speeds. To have other information pushed on you is like walking to a library and being unable to get the book you want for weeks, but they have 1000 copies of Rush Limbaugh’s Biography. Sure, that would be okay because you would just go to another library, but what if this was the only library in the world. To abolish net neutrality is to remove a freedom granted to every person on the planet
the freedom to access information. It can be argued that the bill won’t control the information just the speed that you download it or the opportunity for you to view it, but this is just as limiting. To allow the highest bidder to show you their information first is a violation of your right to reality. Take the news for instance. Fox News could pay all the other major telecoms to get their news up first. You would be slanted to their view because it would be shoved down your throat. It makes me sad that for the first time, anyone, anywhere, has access to any amount of information that they want whether it’s porn or it’s professional, and now a group of corporations, already fat on money, wants to take it away. The internet should not be controlled. It was made by people for people. To protest the bill, please feel free to visit this link. Do not let the NCTA convince people that they should hand over their rights to information and reality. NCTA sucks

B&O POS Serene

Bang & Olufsen is coming out with a clamshell cell phone developed with Samsung that costs...oh...about $1275. Are you kidding me? This thing that looks like an ID project from Sophomore year back in 1995. The interface is a complete nightmare with the screen on the bottom and the numeric pad in a dial shape rather than the commonly accepted grid format on top. The whole thing has freakish proportions that hurt my eyes just to look at, and the screen...wtf is up with that screen? I'm upset that someone got paid to do that, an entire marketing team requested it (probably shooting down a few good ideas along their way towards aesthetic catastrophe), and that someone will buy it.... Wii Card at Target

The Wii gift card at Target is a piece of marketing mastery. Why? Because it lights up. But seriously, it's a nice blend of the Wii branding (white, glowing blue LEDs) with the Target branding (red, simple, white). We can't talk up the Wii enough here at 7dv. In fact, this weekend in ATL, we used a remote mouse on a TV that uses gyroscopic sensors to determine position, and it was hard to put down--and that was just surfing the web. Wii Card at Target

Burton Series 13

Burton recently updated their Series 13 site for the upcoming winter season. The site features 13 different board types, tons of themes, and an unbelievable amount of options to make sure you get the board that fits your steez. It's amazing that they can command $800 for an updated snurfer, but hey, Burton's the king. They market well, they founded the sport, and they stay true to the genre. Sure, you can say they're the microsoft of the snow industry, but the market is so fickle that if they weren't true, the customers would leave. Another well done piece in their winter empire. The trailer alone is inspiring, but whether it's real in-game footage isn't clear, and the trick control options with the bullet-time camera makes the game a visual stunner. The game will no doubt be a best-seller becuase of it's history and marketing, but whether it's a fun game to play has yet to be decided...but shit it looks cool. The demo should arrive tomorrow. New Sony Bravia Ad

Most other design blogs have linked to this advertisment, and yeah, it's cool, but I think that the Bravia Balls commercial from a while ago was a much better composition, especially the music. The new ad does, however, feature an amazing rainbow explosion from a building and a random clown running. If anyone can explain the clown, that would be great... New Sony Bravia Ad

Dove: Evolution Ad

The Dove: Evolution Ad above is part of Dove's Real Women ad campaign. The campaign seems to come from Dove's belief system rather than a marketing ploy, and even though the ads helped increase Dove's revenue in the UK last year by 700%, they did so because people identified with the message of the ads--to get that kind of acceptance with a belief takes sincerity. The ads are a consistent series that don't seem like one-off attempts to appeal to the belief that all women are beautiful. The ads convey that all women are beautiful, and the Evolution ad even helps women understand the amount of trickery used to sell products. Sure, the woman in the scene is pretty, but she is done over by 10 people, and then Photoshopped to be something she couldn't possibly be. Women need to understand that they are beautiful, and men have to understand that the women we see everyday in print and in movies are misrepresentations of the fairer sex. We're all victims of visual distortion . Dove: Evolution

Cocaine Drink

After this, can Red Bull be considered extreme? Redux Beverages of Las Vegas recently released a drink called "Cocaine" that is 350% stronger than Red Bull, but claims that people won't experience the "sugar crash" associated with other energy drinks. The drink's main energy source is caffeine (280mg per 8.4 oz. can to be exact), and the maker's claim that the only way to get a more powerful dose of caffeine is with an espresso shot. Cocaine also contains a throat numbing ingredient to make the experience a little bit more like its namesake, which has caused quite a bit of news already, from inciting protest online and in stores to being outlawed in Australia (they outlaw everything except big knives). All I know is that I want one, and I can't get it unless I spend $10 on ebay for 8oz..

Cardboard Laptop Bag

While possibly not usable, the cardboard laptop case form Giles Miller of FarmDesigns is a unique looking piece with interesting texture. He offers the piece with a leather strap and customizable graphic on the exterior. I have no idea how he's creating the graphic; if you go to his site, he has an amazing table that he explains uses "fluting", the alternating angles of corrugation in the cardboard, but there's no word on how the alternating angles are created. Cardboard Laptop Bag

Sony PS3: Play Beyond

The new Sony PS3 site: Play Beyond (playb3yond.com), is a code based piece that invites community decifering to access it's hidden contents. The symbols above represent the alphabet, and when you click the letters inthe right order, the site comes alive with video, screens, and wallpapers from the upcoming launch title. You could figure it out yourself, or you could just go here. 7dv recommends the shortcut...unless your that guy from "A Beautiful Mind". Sony PS3: Play Beyond

Product RED

Product RED is and initiative to raise money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS started by Bono. The idea is that it's a brand which is licensed to partner companies, and when the partner companies make a sale, a percentage of the profits will go to the Global Fund. Whether this is marketing gimmickry or a truly believable campaign remains to be seen, but brands such as Converse, Armani, Gap, Amex, and Motorola are all contributing with a red iPod from Apple and Oprah on the way. The basic idea is that we as first-world consumers will purchase with conscience, and in doing so, possibly contribute over 100 million dollars in available funds for fighting AIDS. Product RED

LRG and Furstenberg Sidekicks

The Sidekick now comes in special edition LRG and Diane von Furstenberg designs. The actual Sidekick remains the same, but now you can get it in green or black. Uniqlo Website

Uniqlo is a high quality, affordable clothing provider that focuses on getting the best goods to the consumer at the lowest price. They achieve this by using low cost operations and directly linking marketing and production by the shortest and cheapest means. They've been using container stores in NYC for the past few months as they await the opening of their SoHo store. They also have an absolutely amazing website that produces pixelated images using color swatches from the product, and then the individual pixels act as the interface...insane...beautiful. Uniqlo

Nike Cosplay iD ad/viral

Cosplay, the Japanese term for dressing up in costume and pretending to be anime, comic, manga, game, and cartoon characters is used here by Nike in a well done, almost viral video to explain the individuality of the iD line and the multitude of colors offered as well. Not only is the ad well done, but it takes place in the geographically correct locale of Akiba, electronics city and mecca fo cosplay. A little warning, the video runs a little long. Nike Cosplay iD ad

Tinker Hatfield on the AirMax 1

Here's Tinker Hatfield talking about the creation of the AirMax 1 and the visible air bladder. The video is well done, and it's an informative interview, though the segment of Tinker in the "design meeting" is a little on the rediculous side (especially since the Nike Air Bladder is rumored in shoe creation circles to have been created by an error in the molding process rather than a breakthrough in a meeting; however we'll give credit to Tinker for recognizing an apparent flaw as a rich detail).

Admittedly, 7dv ripped this video off of the LaMJC site and ripped it to YouTube to post it for more people to view. If this was in anyway offiensive or illegal or bad manners, let us know and we'll right it. Tinker on the AirMax 1

Terabyte!!!

The My Book™ Pro Edition™ II from Western Digital holds 1 Terabyte of storage!! One Terabyte! Seriously, that's a lot of space (1000 GBs for those geek speak impaired), and it's about the size of a family size box of pop-tarts (approx. 7" x 7" x 4"), it costs an easily affordable $549, and uses Firewire 400 & 800 and USB 2.0 for transfer. Though the packaging is a little HAL 9000, and uses the WD logo a little too boldy on the side, it's still sleek enough to sit on your desk. My Book™ Pro Edition™ II

Vodaphone Journey

One of our favorite web design firms, North Kingdom, created this site for Vodaphone a little while back to showcase the future visions for the company's future from enriching it's customer's lives to it's global presence. The site is very well done with it's mixture of video with flash, the interface is clean and easy to use, and the overall presentation is compelling. Vodaphone Journey

Scriptographer

Let's be honest, the Adobe Illustrator filters kind of suck. Watchismo

Watchismo is a site dedicated to vintage watches. The site isn't really the best design, and the logo is atrocious, but the catalog that this store has is amazing. 49up

"49 up" is the seventh film in a series of documentareis that started 42 years ago in the UK. Inspired by the Jesuit maxim, "Give me the child until he is seven, and I will give you the man", the doc. interviewed a group of seven year-olds in England, asking them about their lives and futures. Now that the group is all 49 years-old, the documentary sets about seeing who and what these people have become in a sometimes sad, but always human manner. 49up

Audi R8

The Audi R8, a 420 horsepower, all-wheel drive work of automotive art was recently unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. The car features a 4.6s 0-60mph time, 187mph topspeed, LED head and tail lights, and a side trim panel that can be customized as 3 different colors or carbon. The micro-site from Audi is equally impressive as the care--it has to be seen to be believed. Also, the booth in Paris featured cut-aways of the car that can be found here . Audi R8

Lighting and Shading in Alias ST

Dustion Brown over at the Gnomon workshop has a tutorial DVD on lighting and shading in Alias/Autodesk Studio Tools. Studio Tools, while being an amazing program for its complexity, is also a very confusing program for its complexity. This tutorial puts the rendering cookies on the lower shelf where most of us can grab them, including difficult topics like depth of field, chrome, and clearcoat finishes. Taxidermy is huge

The rise of taxidermy and it's imagery in fashion and art is hard not to notice. The above pieces from (left)Roost and (right) Big-Game are further evidence of this growing trend. The odds of you having a real stuffed animal are slim to none, but owning one of these kitschey works makes the idea more plausible, and hey, horned beast heads make great coat hangers . Taxidermy

BMW "We say no" campaign

BMW's new ad campaing, "We say no" communicates a powerful message of determination to avoid group-think, complacency, and compromise. Anyone that's read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" or "The Fountainhead", will be familiar with the idea of how compromise can lead to an incomplete, 2nd rate, or myopic product. Coming from a design enivironment where I've been told that a design "looks too good, can we make it uglier?", I can identify with the BMW campaign. For a company to come forward with this theory in their advertising is inspiring. The site will even let you upload your own "No" statement of things that you won't compromise for. I could write for days on this, but those of you that know where I'm coming from don't need an explanation. Just look at the site. We Say No

Josh Spear of joshspear.com is currently traveling through Asia, and he was recently in Daikanyama, Japan. He stopped by the Beams T-shirt shop and snapped this photo. Beams T's offers limited edition artist shirts to the the mass market through their website and a few shops in Japan. We Feel Fine

If you look at one site today it should be this site. It's incredible, runs smoothly, and it's well designed. "We Feel Fine" is an applet that searches the internet every few minutes, looking in the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence. It then saves the information into a "feeling" database and allows you to filter the feelings of gender, countries, years, states, etc.. The reason that this is so amazing is that the interface is very well done, AND it has the ability to guage the general feelings of the internet. I can't write enough to do this site justice, go see for yourself; it's stunning. We Feel Fine

Free SkypeOut

Skype just announced that SkypeOut is now free in the US and Canada. This means that you can use SkypeOut to call any landline or mobile number for free; the only catch is that the promotion only lasts until the end of 2006. VoIP is off the chain now. The phone companies are about to be stomped on by Skype and the big chat providers (Google Talk, Yahoo IM, etc.). Soon we'll all just be dialling and talking over IP, this is just a promotion to win over more people. [By the way, in case you didn't know, Skype is a downloadable VOIP (Voice Over IP) that provides a service that lets you call anyone also on the Skype network for free...anywhere in the world... The 20,000 foot store is the second store for Apple in Manhatten, and the 32x32x32 $9 million glass cube is rumored to be designed by Steve Jobs who is supposedly making an appearance. Even more crazy is that the store is underground; the glass cube will appear to be empty, and you'll ride an elevator down to the floorspace...wtf? The technology is so good that it allows blind people to catch balls and notice people walking by them. The device uses 144 microelectrodes to transmit information through the nerve fibers to the brain. Brain Port

I am 8-bit exhibition

The guys and girls at Product Dose went to look at the "I am 8-bit" opening in LA last night. "I am 8-bit" is an exhibition featuring 80's gaming-inspired artwork, including sketches, paintings, and sculpture. If you're like me, and can't attend the event, you can visit the 8-bit site here (the intro is obnoxious and cannot be skipped). Worth a look if you'd like to see some interesting takes on the influential, pixelated characters from our past. I am 8-bit (via Productdose)

Scarpar All Terrain Board

Motorized tank-treaded board for all terrain conditions. The video speaks for itself. Though not a huge fan of the many "lets-snowboard-on-dry-land-but-not-skateboard" gimmicks out there, this looks fun, and how much would some hippies hiking in the forest hate you if you drove by on this exhaust spewing, loud, trail and terrain eater? A lot...they would hate you a lot...which means this thing pays for itself. The Scarpar will come to market in "2007". Scarpar All Terrain Board

1.618 Vinci Cut Diamond

Shlomo (no lie that's his real name) Cohen, and Israeli designer has created and patented a new cut of diamond based off of the Golden Ratio (~1.618 :1) that he's calling "The Vinci Diamond". Shlomo, who is already credited with coming up with the immensely popular "Princess Cut" in 1982, has been studying the Golden Ratio since 2001. Though in a few interviews he's made plain that he knew about the ratio long before the release of Dan Brown's book and that the name is reflective of Leonardo's study of the ratio in the Vitruvian Man, he's still riding the wave of enthusiasm by choosing the "Vinci" namesake. Richard Sweeney--Paper Sculpture

The image you're looking at above is created by scoring and folding paper. Richard Sweeney is an artist from the UK that uses paper as one of his mediums, and he takes paper to a realm of Calatravan detail with his use of structure and repitition. The 7dv link above will take you to a Flickr site, but you can see his actual website here. Richard Sweeney

Monome--box with buttons

Holy Crap! This is stuff we used to joke about in school... There was no real need for design, you could just build a box with bottons and turn it in for an astounding A on your project. Well, here it is. The Monome is a box...with buttons... Though it's simple, it's beautiful in that it's an infinite interface that the user programs using the Monome's "mapd" software. From keypads, to directionals, to drum machines, the Monome will take care of all your needs You can find an interesting demo video here. Monome

Banksy

British graffiti artist Banksy now has video up on his site...well, it's new to me. For those of you that don't know of this genius, Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist from Britain that is reclaiming public spaces for personal expression, going even as far as illegally hanging his work in the Moma. He also recently went to the Segregation Wall in Isreal's West Bank and did some pieces--there's a nice article on it here. Banksy

Nissan GT-R

Though I first thought that this was a poor design, the more I look at it, the better it gets. The rear lights call back to older GT-R's., and the front end almost looks like there are two cars in one with the black core pushing undernieth the armored silver frame--more pics after the jump. The Nissan GT-R of Skyline GT-R fame will go into production in 2007. Nissan GT-R

Space Adventures

Want to take a ride in an Su-30? Probably the most maneuverable jet that the Russian block ever conceived, the Su-30, though old and rugged, can still fly toe to toe with younger planes. spaceadventures.com has plenty of programs for you to check out if you have an extra $25,000 lying around. Even if you don't want to fly in the Su-30, you can go through 0G space training or take a Mig25 to the edge of space, and most vacations include luxury accomodations, guided tours of Moscow, and a spa session. I hope you enjoy it because, let's face it, any other vacation would suck after going to space... Space Adventures

Je Joue - sensual intelligence

For the ladies. Meet Je Joue, the sensual personal massager. Claimed to be based on actual foreplay and to be "more creative than the most talented lover", the Je Joue vibrates with an "infinite" amount of patterns that they call "grooves". The handset comes with 10 grooves, but what really makes the device unique is that the owner can use the provided sofware (Pleasureware) to create her own grooves that vary in vibration, speed, and angles and then save and upload them to the handset. Not only that, but she can share her grooves with a friend via email or an online community. I don't know if it's weird to find your perfect orgasm from a woman in Wyoming or not, but it might be worth a look. Je Joue

Ha ha ha ha ha... Nothing is sacred. I'm putting a 7DV advertisment up on these sheep in the Netherlands next week. Oh man, this is so good... McDonald's ads on cows, Starbucks ads on cofee pickers, Georgia Pacific ads on trees. It's like having sponsored commodities. Sheep-vertising

Rain

A nice pendant lamp inspired by windchimes, Rain uses LEDs to power its melodic and flute-like aluminum cylinders. Utilized in a sushi bar AKA, the lights/chimes can be customized for lighting preferences AND also musical tones. Interesting and affordable piece you could probably make yourself if you wanted.

I've seen the 1st Ave Machine site before, but not since the debut of the "Sixes Last" piece--they blur the line between real and unreal. Tom Chudleigh Tree Spheres

Tom Chudleigh out of British Columbia, Canada set out to make boats, but ended up making these crazy Ewok style tree spheres. The Spheres hang on three ropes to three separate trees (3 old trees make what druids used to call a "sacred grove"), and they're constructed out of 2 layers of laminated wood with a fiberglass surface coating. Just imagine your reaction to suddenly coming across a "colony" of hundreds of these things in the trees at night in some dark forest... Tom Chudleigh Tree Spheres --(via Josh Spear)

Fem Bot

Well, I could bore you with the technical specs of this robot, but what you're really thinking is, "hey, can I have sex with it?" The answer is no, but as far as robots go, she's(?) sexier than Number5 from Short Circuit. It's too bad the video, seen here, makes her look like she's metally handicapped. FT Female Type Robot

Pixel Roller

This is kind of old news, but the idea of this thing is inspiring. A digital paint roller that creates the image as the user moves the roller up and down on any type of surface. The image above doesn't really do the device justice. You'll have to go to the site to see the true power of it. I mean, this thing is bordering on being able to draw a tunnel on a mountainside like Wile E. Coyote used to try to do to the Roadrunner. Pixel Roller

Firebird Onesie

Firebird Screamin' Chicken onesie for babies in gold print. Now your seed can be just as redneck as you... Now let's take minute to talk here. The Trans Am has a bad rap (read: redneck), for sure, but you know you'd snag that logo on your car right now if you had the chance. In fact, I might get one vinyl printed for mine tomorrow. With old muscle cars re-emerging left and right (Mustang, Charger, Camero), you know the old-school Trans Am can't be that far behind; I just hope that Pontiac is smart[sic] enough to come out with an all black, gold-rimmed, 'bird that brazenly touts this phoenix on its hood.

Additional info for the "X-Games+Rally" post: If you don't know what Rally Racing is, watch this. Oh, and if you don't like Linkin' Park, turn your sound off, the video is worth it. Rally Video

Rally + X-Games

X-games 12 (August 3-6 in LA) will now have a speacial guest star--Rally Racing. If ESPN doesn't screw it up and make Rally out to be the new cool and over-sell it or over-announce it, then this should be off the chain. The competition will feature 6 "scenic" rally stages and one Super Stage in a stadium setting. X-games to feature Rally Racing

Hitachi Theft-proof Projector

How can you not love design after looking at this thing. The Hitachi ED-x10 isn't like most projectors that try to look all "good" and "sexy". Nope, this one says, much like the poisonous animals in nature, "I'm ugly, don't touch me". Designed for use in schools and colleges, the ED is built to foil theives. In addition to its orange exterior, it comes equipped with an digital PIN locking system (yeah, you have to key in a PIN to use it) and a steel security bar. I just think it's cool when designers have to make something not sexy. I mean, c'mon, for all it's ruggedness, the Hummer is still sexy; it still says, "I can get you laid". I like when designers are challenged to push themselves in an opposite direction to make an unattractive device... Theft-Proof Projector

Multi-funciton Pen

Normally, I'm not all about things that do everything--I don't need a phone that's also a shoe horn, but this is interesting. The multi-function pen features a ballpoint pen, a highlighter, a lead pencil, a stylus for PDAs and a ruler with centimeters and inches. Sounds like an engineer's wet-dream, but I know there's been times when I needed to measure something that was 3mm long and I had to waste time going to search for some calipers or an unweildy ruler. Multi-funciton Pen

The Highline Party

On April 10th the grounbreaking of The Highline in NYC will begin. To celebrate the city is throwing a free party on Little West 12th Street.

A little history: The Highline, an unused portion 1.5 miles of an old Manhattan freight line had become reclaimed by grass, bushes and trees. The Highline Project (after 20 years of legal battles) plans to take this lofted piece of land and convert it into a public place that is contrary to its surroundings--slow, quiet, simple, wild. If you haven't heard of this or seen it by now, you should look at the site. Go. Go now.

Oh, additional info can be found here.

Radtech I-sight

Okay, ignoring the lame name, this is a great idea. Anyone who camps knows that flashlights are bunk when you're trying to use your hands, and those head mounted things are busted, so what do you do? You go out and get an I-sight and roll like a Navy Seal, that's what you do.

Pack Man

Pack Man takes the single player game of Pac-Man and turns it into a multi-player democracy where Pac-Man only moves based on the majority decision. If 5 people play, and 3 move up, and 2 move down, Pac will go up. If 6 people play, and three move left, while 3 move right, Pac will do niether. The idea is pretty cool but then you read that the game is severly slowed down to account for group think. How slow? 10% normal speed. That's how dumb other people make you... B.I.E.

This is a pure tribute post to the best interns ever. I wouldn't normally do this, but these two--"Melissa" and Katie--were outstanding. Space Elevator

We've heard a lot about Space Elevators in the past few years, but this illustration is absolutely disturbing. "Hey, lets tie the Earth to a giant asteroid in space as we hurtle through the cosmos!" Isn't this a little like tying the human race to a tetherball pole--eventually you'll get hit. The article hints at reducing the cost of space travel and all the superpowers clamoring to grab one. Sure, I mean, c'mon, who needs a nuclear device when you can just have a big rock tied to a string that could potentially kill us all. It's basically a killer yo-yo. Space Elevator (Engadget)

The car gets 50mpg, has over 300hp, and does 0-60 in under 4 seconds. Beyond being amazing from a technical standpoint, the car was built after hours by self proclaimed C and D students. AI Designed Antenna for Nasa

Try to wrap your mind around this. Nasa now has this new antenna for its satellites that looks like a paperclip glued to a cable port bought at RadioShack. So what right? Well, the antenna was designed by a network of 37 computers running an evlolving algorithm, which means that this was a bred and evolved design done only by a computer. How does this virtual designer work? Roughly, the system is given a set of specs, it then proceeds to build virtual prototypes, test them, evaluate the tests, and then rebuild them to make them better. It can also cross pollenate the products to improve them, breeding the good parts of two different designs to make a better one. In a month the system could run through millions of variations to find which one is genetically the best fit for the problem. Beyond the fact that this is amazing, it raises the question, are designers obsolete? Could the program be told to design a shoe for a given market, pricepoint, and gender and then nail it in a month?

Microsoft's Oragami Project

Most of the info on this ethereal project is speculation and myth, but in about 1 to 2 weeks, Microsoft will be unveiling thiere Oragami Device. Blendie: Talk to your Blender

You have got to be f*cking kidding me... MIT's Kelly Dobson has created a blender that you can communicate with...sort of. The device blends food at the pitch and power of the human voice, but you have to learn to speak the machine's language--growl for a low churn, use a highpitched scream for liquify. Could this eventually make its way into vibrators?...just a thought. If anything, watch the video. Blendie

Aurland Lookout/Saunders Architecture

Saunder's Architechture, run by Canadian Todd Saunders, won first prize for this lookout in Aurland, Norway. A unique piece that juts out over the dramatic landscape and falls off in a distubing, but inviting manner.

The firm, operates out of Norway, and develops forms and space that "suggest a critique of urban planning, provides solutions to contemporary housing solutions, or create sympathetic yet robust new forms for residential housing that are additions to the dramatic landscape in which they sit". Whatever...it's beautiful work, and the firm seems to love to use gymnasium flooring(hardwood flooring) for almost everything.

Don't know if you guys have seen this or not (it's old), but the composition of millions of colored super bouncy balls going down a street in San Francisco set to Jose Gonzalez's reamke of "Heartbeats" is mystical. The site features a short and feature length versions of the commercial along with a "making of" section. Sony Bravia

iPod Hi-Fi

Apple sucks... Sorry people, but it's an expensive piece of equipment($350) that won't even play 5.1 surround. It looks like a freshman year ID project made with Tupperware and white and black paint, plus the iPod sticks out of it in a "please break me" kind of manner.

No-No Knives

"Nothing says 'I don't want children' like a No-No Knife set. Knives slide into a ceramic outlet. Alexander Reh (Core77)

Apple Announcement Today

Apple will be announcing an upcoming product within a few hours. Most speculate that it will be a HiFi docking boom-box with other mysteriousalicious features; others say that it will be a touch-screen video-pod, while a small portion of people think that it will be a car...a small portion. Gizmodo will be covering the entire event.

Z4 by Josh Davis

Let me introduce you to Josh Davis--sick artist/designer/thinker. Recently, he was asked to do his interpretation of the BMW Z4 utilizing his stylistic digital algorhithms (read: the guy creates art from math) His typical artwork will contain 120,000 layers and 50,000 vectors; the guy is on another level. Second Life

I'm going to break it down real simple: Second Life is a game where real people create fake versions of themselves to own fake businesses to make fake stuff and sell it in the real world for real dollars...what? The game is somewhat a copy of the real world with possible occupations as tour guide, landscaper, bodyguard, gunsmith, etc... Second Life also uses Linden Dollars which have a real world exchange rate with US Dollars. The game features land owning opportunities, businesses, and vitual campuses created and supported by actual universities; the developers offer cash incentives for the user with the most visited piece of land; and the community has multiple real world websites devoted to the shops in the game. I just wonder what will happen will all of these virtual economies with no real idea of scarcity start affecting the real world economies.
